Building the Future Workforce Today

A growing number of high school students are stepping away from traditional part-time jobs and pursuing meaningful career opportunities—starting right here at National Cart Company.

Through our youth apprenticeship program, students are earning while learning in real-world manufacturing environments that can shape their futures and open doors to long-term careers.

A Smarter Path After School

At NCC, we partner with local school districts to offer both pre-apprenticeship and registered apprenticeship programs. These experiences combine classroom learning with paid, on-the-job training in skilled trades and advanced manufacturing. By the time they graduate, many students have already completed a significant portion of their required apprenticeship hours—building toward a nationally recognized credential through the U.S. Department of Labor’s Registered Apprenticeship system.

Apprenticeships are gaining traction in fields like healthcare, IT, and clean energy—but they remain underutilized in many sectors. We’re working to change that. At National Cart, we’re creating accessible pathways for students to:

Build Real-World Skills

Gain a Strong Work Ethic

Make an Impact on the Team

A Culture of Shared Learning

Today’s students thrive in environments that emphasize collaboration and project-based learning. At NCC, we embrace that mindset through what we call a “community of practice”—a workplace where learning flows in every direction. That means:

  • Shadowing team members to learn new roles
  • Cross-training for adaptability and team strength
  • Peer-to-peer coaching that builds confidence and leadership

These practices not only strengthen day-to-day operations, but also help prepare our team for the evolving demands of modern industry through upskilling and reskilling.

Real-World Impact: A Local Success Story

In partnership with the Fort Zumwalt School District, National Cart and other employers have helped more than 50 students complete youth apprenticeships. These students typically log around 2,000 hours of training, with some continuing their apprenticeships after graduation—giving them a meaningful head start in their careers.

This opportunity became possible when the Department of Labor updated regulations to allow registered apprenticeships to begin at age 16—even in traditionally hazardous industries—provided the right training and supervision are in place.

“I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do after high school, but the apprenticeship helped me figure that out. I learned real skills, worked with awesome mentors, and now I actually feel excited about my future.”

Pathways to a Clean Energy Future

One of the most exciting opportunities for apprenticeships lies in manufacturing. As demand grows for sustainable manufacturing and logistics, we’re preparing the next generation with the skills needed to support THE shift.

In collaboration with Climate Action Pathways for Schools (CAPS) and intermediaries like IWSI America, National Cart is actively expanding these apprenticeship tracks. These programs give students experience with real sustainability projects and introduce them to careers like energy technicians, sustainability specialists, and manufacturing roles that support the clean economy.
